An updated version of the Canada-United States Core Facts document is now available for organizations undertaking trade and investment-related activities.

Furthermore, on May 29, 2025 Statistics Canada made a key update regarding foreign direct investment (FDI) flows for Q1 2025, highlighting several notable trends in the context of recent global developments:

• FDI Inflows: Canada recorded $28.2 billion in FDI inflows from January to March 2025, marking the second-highest quarterly total since 2010. This strong performance was largely driven by mergers and acquisitions (M&A), which contributed $11.6 billion. For context, this is significantly higher than the 2015–2024 quarterly average of $14.2 billion. The United States remained the largest source, accounting for $16.3 billion or 57.8% of total inflows. No notable trends emerged across industries.

• Canadian Direct Investment Abroad (CDIA): In contrast, CDIA flows were relatively subdued, totaling $7.4 billion, compared to the 2015–2024 quarterly average of $25.1 billion. M&A activity abroad hit a record low of -$14.4 billion, primarily due to significant divestments in the U.S. (-$20.0 billion), suggesting Canadian enterprises sold off substantial U.S.-based assets. At the industry level, CDIA flows were negative in energy and mining (-$0.8 billion) and reached a record low in finance and insurance (-$3.6 billion), possibly indicating repatriation of funds.
