An updated version of the Canada-United States Core Facts document is now available for organizations undertaking trade and investment-related activities.
Furthermore, on August 28, 2025, Statistics Canada released new data on foreign direct investment (FDI) flows for the second quarter of 2025 (Q2). The results are noteworthy considering recent global developments and the ongoing narrative around businesses’ investment hesitancy.
- From April to June, Canada recorded FDI inflows of $21 billion, significantly above the past 10-year quarterly average of $15 billion. Combined with strong inflows in Q1, total FDI reached $52 billion for the first half of the year, nearly matching the 10-year average of $57 billion for a full year. The United States remained the main source of FDI, contributing over $12 billion or 61% of total inflows.
- Canadian Direct Investment Abroad (CDIA) also rebounded, from $8.7 billion in Q1 to almost $29 billion in Q2, compared to the past 10-year quarterly average of $25 billion. After a record low in Q1 mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity of –$14 billion, driven by important divestments from Canadian affiliates in the U.S., Q2 M&A flows recovered to $8.5 billion, closer to typical levels, though still below average. Notably, non-U.S. CDIA outflows accounted for 50% of CDIA flows in Q2, above their 10-year average share of 36%.
