Women and youth are underrepresented groups within Ontario's Agricultural industry. Removing barriers to working in agriculture, for both Women and Youth, is an important step towards creating a resilient and strong Agri-food Industry. The Canadian farmer's average age was 58 in 2021, leading to the projection that 40% of farmers will retire in the next ten years. Woman are becoming more represented in the agricultural sphere, as 31% of farm operators in Ontario are Women. This percentage has an opportunity to grow with the impending need for talented and passionate farmers. Economic Developers can help assist in engaging Women and Youth to enter and stay within the Agri-food industry.
