CORNWALL – Target will have a distribution center in Cornwall, according to a company spokesperson.
"We will have a distribution center in Cornwall, I can confirm that," said Molly Snyder, spokesperson for Target. "We're beginning work on it now."
While there is currently "no solid opening date," Snyder did say that the center will be open in advance of the first Target stores opening across Canada.
These stores are expected to begin to open early into 2013.
Target expects to open 100 to 150 stores throughout Canada in 2013 and 2014.
"The distribution center will open a few months prior to that," said Snyder.
The center will be located in Cornwall, but Snyder said she could not provide a specific location. It will, she said, be located on 169 acres and will be a 1.3-million square-foot facility.
All logistics, she said, will be outsourced. Snyder did not have any information on how many jobs will be on site at this facility.
"There will be jobs there," she said. "(The center) will be staffed by the logistics provider...people working there will not be employees of Target. How they (the logistics company) go about their staffing is something I cannot comment on. They will manage all the operations."
Paul Fitzpatrick, the city's chief administrative officer, said the location of the Target property is in the Cornwall Business Park, at the very west end of Industrial Park Drive.
Earlier this year, council approved a tender for the extension of Industrial Park Drive, he said.
"We're undertaking approximately $4 million of infrastructure improvements in our business park for future growth," he said. "...We're extending the road, the water main and the sewer."
